Meet Jan Smith
Jan Smith, CFSP is the Vice President of Funeral Operations for Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Centers, which is part of the Buchanan Group of Companies. With sixteen locations, Flanner and Buchanan has been serving the central Indiana community for over 130 years and is one of Indiana’s oldest family owned and operated businesses. Flanner and Buchanan opened the first crematory in the state of Indiana in 1904 and continues to own and operate it today.
Jan spent 10 years as the VP/COO at Baue Funeral Homes, Crematory, Cemetery in St. Charles, MO. She also served as the Managing Partner for Fuller Funeral Homes with five locations throughout Naples, FL serving a very high cremation market.
She attained her B.S. from Eastern Illinois University, attended Worsham College of Mortuary Science, and later completed her MBA with a concentration in HR. She is affiliated with a variety of industry associations including the International Cemetery Cremation & Funeral Association (ICCFA), National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA), and the Cremation Association of North America (CANA). She has also been involved in various organizations supporting women in business including ESPW (Encouraging, Supporting, Promoting Women), NAWBO (North American Women Business Owners) with the largest chapter in Indianapolis, and the Indianapolis Chamber Women’s Events. She performs speaking engagements on end of life planning both for the public and professionals, as well as mentors students regularly through training and presentations to interns and local mortuary schools. She was a Mentor for the 2015 NFDA Meet the Mentors Program. She is a past recipient of the 40 Under 40 Award and Dove Award for Personal Achievement.
Jan serves in multiple capacities at her church Holy Cross Lutheran, as well as participates in her son’s sports teams.
Jan and her husband Aaron live in Fishers, IN with their ten year old son Andrew.
